Mrs. Betty Jo Walker Casey

Betty Jo Walker Casey, 92, of Canon, Georgia, passed peacefully on Saturday, May 27, 2023, at Saint Mary's Hospital in Athens. Betty Casey was born in Bessemer City, North Carolina, on March 22, 1931, the daughter of the late James Preston Walker and the late Macie Strickland Walker. She had one brother, Jimmy Walker. She moved to Griffin, Georgia, with her family and spent her childhood there. On August 13, 1949, she married James Casey, Sr. and resided in Canon for the rest of her life. Mrs. Casey took great pleasure in grocery shopping and had a passion for cooking and baking. She amassed a collection of over 1500 cookbooks and delighted in carrying her culinary creations to friends and family throughout the community. Her hot buttered biscuits were renowned, believed by many to have healing powers. Despite her initial fear of chickens, she embraced the joys of farm life, which she shared with her one true love, Jim. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Casey Sr, daughter-in-law Cathy Casey, son-in-law Don Ross, son-in-law Richard Otey, and great-great-grandson Blayne Jones-Johnson. She also had a special place in her heart for her fur babies: Girl, Blauser, Smokey, Snuggles, and Sunshine. Mrs. Casey is survived by her children: Gloria (Ed) Looney of Martin, GA; Joan (Don) Herron of Lavonia, GA; Jamie Diaz-Otey of Statesville, NC; Candy (Harold) Ross-Rhoades of Franklin Springs, GA; and James Casey Jr of Canon, GA. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Amy (Bryan) Jones of Thomasville, GA; Adam Looney of Martin, GA; Donna (Rob) Cherveny of Homer, GA; Dee Ann (Michael) Alexander of Lavonia, GA; Amanda (Jason) Daye of Statesville, NC; Keith (Gay) Otey of N. Las Vegas, NV; Amber (Clayton) Waugh of N. Las Vegas, NV. Her great-grandchildren include Brayden, Westen, and Jamesen Looney; Brycen and Adalynn Jones; Mason, Sawyer, and Lyla Cherveny; Carter and Chloe Alexander; Tehya, Brooke, and Isabella Daye; Olivia Waugh; Douglas (Jessica) Jones-Johnson; Peyton Otey; and great-great-grandchildren Danica and Layla Jones-Johnson. Additionally, she is survived by special niece Melinda Casey and many other nieces, nephews, and special friends. Funeral services for Mrs. Casey will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 30, 2023, at Gaines Chapel Methodist Church with Dr. Sarah Harris Justice officiating. The church is located at 3195 Starrs Bridge Road, Canon, Georgia 30520. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church at 4:00 p.m. until funeral hour. At other times, the family will be at their respective homes. Pruitt Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
