Gregory James Carey, 58, of Honea Path, S.C., passed away Friday, June 21, 2024, at AnMed Medical Center in Anderson. He was born July 1, 1965, and is the son of James Larion Carey and Doris Hart Carey of Starr. Greg grew up in the Flat Rock Community of Starr, S.C., and was a charter member of Unity Baptist Church. He was a graduate of Crescent High School and later earned his BS Degree from Clemson University. For several years, he worked at Chiquola Mill in Honea Path, where he garnered many lifelong friendships. Over the years after the mill’s closure, he worked for several employers, most notable were Carolina Pride in Greenwood and Flexible Technologies in Abbeville. He was also owner/operator of his own lawncare business. Most recently, and the job he was most proud of, was with Childs Burial Vault Company in Anderson, where he was the Plant Manager. For the past 28 years, Greg served as a volunteer firefighter. First with the Honea Path Fire Department, in Anderson County, and currently with Keowee Volunteer Fire Department in Honea Path, a division of the Abbeville County Fire System, where he formerly served as Assistant Chief. He was also a Mason, and member of Centre Masonic Lodge of F.&A.M. #37 in Honea Path. When not working or spending time with his family, Greg loved to be fishing and hunting. He was an avid NASCAR fan and loved all things Ford, with a special love for Mustangs. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his son, Jonathan Greg Carey, his daughter, Jenna Rebecca Carey (Fiancé-Jarred Davis), his sisters, Lori Carey Smith (Ronnie), and Vickie Carey Dockery (Larry), as well as his nieces and nephews, Hannah Turner (Craig), Stephen Wyatt (Whitney), Kaitlyn Partain (Kip), Logan Smith (Caroline), Caleb Dockery, Megan Moses (Dallas), and Ethan Dockery, as well as 11 great-nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 2:00pm, on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, in The Tribute Room of The Standard Cremation & Funeral Center, 1621 Pearman Dairy Rd., Anderson, S.C. 29625. Rev. Lloyd Robison and Dr. David Pickens will officiate. A burial, with firefighter honors and Masonic Rites will follow at Southlawn Memorial Gardens, on Flat Rock Road in Starr. The family will receive friends in The Maple Room of The Standard Cremation & Funeral Center, prior to the funeral service, from 12:00pm – 2:00pm.
